The Christmas Palm is also known as the Manila Palm or Dwarf Royal. It originates from the Philippines hence the “Manila” Palm name. Its similarity to the Royal Palm is the reason it nicknamed the Dwarf Loyal. The Physical appearance of the Christmas Palm
Once matured, the Christmas tree will bless you with a glorious display of red fruits. The fruits ripen during the Christmas season, hence the given name. If you do not desire to eat the fruit, you can trim the fruit off right before or right after the appearance of the cream tinted blossoms.
The Adonidia merillii or Christmas Palm is a very popular palm which, because of its low typical height, is appropriate for many applications. The Adonidia merillii produces a beautiful, red colored fruit around Christmas, hence the name Christmas Palm. Although not very cold hardy, the Christmas palm is still a lndscape favorite due to it's slow growth rate and self cleaning nature. The palm produces "grey wood" as the palm matures and has a crownshaft that is lime green. The Christmas palm is naturally a single trunk palm but is common as a double, triple or even four trunk palm.
After stocking and growing the Christmas palm tree for a while now, we have noticed that the tree doesn’t grow well in cold climate. Frost is the trees number one enemy as it kills the tree rather than foster it to grow. If you grow the Manila palm in a container, the growth process is slow, and the tree will not mature to its full size. By growing it in the ground, the tree develops faster and grows taller, developing to 20 feet or there about in size. Fortunately, this is a tree with very minimal demands. You only need to prune it once in a while the tree doesn’t shed much, so there is less compost to pick up.
We sell the young Christmas tree in pots of 1 or 2 or 3. You can plant the trees either in your open space or if you prefer, in containers. The Christmas palm tree makes an exquisite centerpiece for your landscape after reaching maturity. A wonderful versatile and easy to grow palm tree, that is both beautiful and graceful.
