One advantage to these subtropical gems is their ability to withstand colder temperatures than many palms. They can be grown as far north in the US as Arkansas or Oregon with good success. While they may not tolerate freezing temperatures, the occasional frost is not going to devastate this hardy palm. We still don't recommend trying to force them to grow in areas below zone 9B.
Soil composition is also not a major factor when considering the Bismarck palm tree. They typically grow in rocky soils, but with proper care can be grown in most soils. They do benefit from regular watering and fertilizing, despite their willingness to withstand moderate drought conditions. In addition to being fairly forgiving of different soils, they do well when exposed to moderate salt spray on their leaves. Avoid planting the Bismarck palm trees anywhere where the roots might become submersed in salt or brackish water.
